MARY AND GEORGE

Are you a Starz subscriber? If you are, and you’re not watching Mary & George, you are really missing out! That is, of course, unless you’re not a fan of sex, violence, and sex … lots of sex! Mary & George is a British historical drama miniseries starring Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine. It was created by D.C. Moore and is directed by Oliver Hermanus, Alex Winckler, and Florian Cossen, based on Benjamin Woolley’s non-fiction book The King’s Assassin (2017) which tells the story of the affair between James VI and I and George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. The key words here are “based on” — there is some wild stuff going on in this version of events that apparently did not happen in real life. There are only seven episodes (five of which are available as of this writing) so it flies by in a flash.
On the Rotten Tomatoes website, the critics’ consensus states, “Bawdy, irreverent, and ruled by Julianne Moore in top form, Mary & George is a regal treat for fans of frothy court intrigue.” This was seconded by The Guardian’s Joel Golby, who gave the miniseries a full five stars, describing it as “a wickedly lewd delight” that is “fresh and new and interesting.” And then there’s Nicholas Galitzine, who set Netflix ablaze last summer in Red, White, and Royal Blue and in the feature film Bottoms. Grab the popcorn!
